Social Media and the Assassination of an Ambassador – The Daily Beast

19 Sep

Remember the role social media played in Arab Spring? Our work as public relations practitioners and our colleagues’ work as journalists is dramatically different than it was just a few years ago. This time, social media helped spread the word (and create confusion) when public servant and Ambassador Christopher Stevens and four other foreign service workers were killed in Libya last week.

Join us for Guest Speaker and Alumna Karyl Barnes

11 Sep

On Friday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m., AU alumna Karyl Barnes will speak to communication arts students about her career path and current work. You’re invited to join us in Fine Arts 170. Please arrive promptly (or even early!) so we can make the most of our time with Karyl. Here’s more about our guest:

Karyl Leigh Barnes, Partner, Development Counsellors International

From her first trip to South America at age five, Karyl Leigh was enthralled by the cultures and customs unearthed in every new place she ventured. After diligently pursuing study abroad programs in Australia, Belgium, Costa Rica and the United Kingdom, she landed quite naturally in destination marketing at Development Counsellors International (DCI), “The Leader in Marketing Places.”

Since joining DCI, Karyl Leigh has designed marketing strategy and implemented award-winning marketing campaigns for destinations on every continent but Antarctica. Today, she heads the three divisions of DCI’s Tourism Practice, which include Consumer PR/Marketing, Travel Trade Marketing and Meeting/Incentive Sales. In her tenure, she has helped DCI rise to become one of the highest grossing, privately-held travel marketing firms in the country. But her foundation in marketing was laid as an undergrad, where she was honored as Anderson University’s Falls School of Business “Outstanding Marketing Graduate.”

She holds a master’s degree in global marketing communications and advertising, is professionally accredited in marketing communications by the International Advertising Association, and is currently pursuing certification in destination marketing (CDME) with DMAI.

Although she went “platinum” on two airlines last year, when not traveling the globe, she and her husband enjoy archery, kayaking and play dates with their whopping 29 nieces and nephews.
